Districts of Lombardy, exports continue to grow: metalworking stands out, fashion recovers

Keep growing theexports from the industrial districts of Lombardy: in the first quarter of 2023 it marked a tendential increase of +3,9%, equal to +350 million euros, compared to the first six months of 2022. However, the result is lower than what was recorded at the national level (+ 7,1%). This is what emerges from the Monitor of the Lombardy districts of Intesa Sanpaolo. Furthermore, the banking group has allocated 500 million euros for families and businesses in those areas that have suffered damage and are facing numerous inconveniences due to bad weather.

To condition the performance, the dynamics of the producer prices. In the first three months of 2023, the producer price index on the foreign market for manufacturing activities, while showing a slowdown, recorded a growth of 6,9% compared to the same period of the previous year. The jump in prices was particularly marked in some sectors of the district-intensive region, such as rice and flour (+ 16,7%), dairy (+ 14,3%), textile products (+ 9,9%), Wood (+ 13%) and furnishings (+11,1%). On the other hand, there is a decline in the metallurgy (-7,2%). 

The growth in sales abroad is widespread: in the first quarter of 2023, in fact, 19 industrial districts in Lombardy, out of the 23 monitored, recorded exports above the levels of the corresponding period of 2022.

Metalworking stands out, fashion does well

Among the district supply chains, the Metalworking (+3,5% compared to the first quarter of 2022, equal to +180,6 million euros), driven by the districts of the Mechanics instrumental in Milan and Monza (+14,4%, +178,9 million euros) and instrumental mechanics of Bergamo (+22,7%, +141,2 million euros). The metalworking industry of Lecco also closed the first three months of 2023 on a positive note (+4,6%, +26,8 million euro), the metalworking industry of the lower Mantua area (+6,7%, +21,6 million euro) , Valle dell'Arno metalworking (+7,1%, +11,6 million euro), Vigevano footwear manufacturing and machinery (+10,6%, +5 million euro) and instrumental mechanics in the Brescia area (+1,3%, +3,3 million euros). Only the Brescia Metals and Instrumental Mechanics districts of Varese closed the first quarter of 2023 with a decrease compared to 2022 (respectively -10,1%, -169,9 million euros, and -13,1%, -37,9, 2022 million euros). In particular, the lower values ​​of the foreign sales of Metalli di Brescia weigh heavily, to whose growth in XNUMX the rise in production prices at an international level had also contributed. In the first months of the year, however, the price trend penalized the exported values ​​of the district which, however, continues to maintain its first place at the regional level. 

Overall positive the Home system (+5,9% compared to 2022, +103,5 million euros), with results that highlight a slowdown compared to the recent past. In order, by increase in value, we find Lumezzane taps, valves and cookware (+7,4%, +77,7 million euros), followed by Wood and furniture from Brianza (+3,5%, +23,1 .5 million euros) and by Legno di Casalasco Viadanese (+2,7%, +XNUMX million euros).

In third place for growth in the values ​​of sales abroad, among the monitored supply chains, that ofAgro-food (+11,2% compared to 2022, +48,9 million euros), which, particularly active in the years of the pandemic, continues its development process on international markets. The rice districts of Pavia stand out (+30,1%, +23,3 million euros), to which the rise in production prices also contributed, the dairy sector of south-eastern Lombardy (+4,9% , +12,9 million euros), followed at a distance by the Meats and cured meats of Cremona and Mantua (+10,6%, +6,7 million euros) and by the Wines and distillates of the Brescia area (+20,5%, +5,9 million euros). 

Positive signals also for the fashion system which, in the first three months of 2023, showed an increase compared to the corresponding period of the previous year of 5,2% (equal to +48 million euros). All the districts of this supply chain recorded an increase in sales to foreign markets, with the sole exception of the Seriana Valley textiles and clothing (-8,2% vs. 2022, -21,2 million euros). The growth achieved by the silk-textile district of Como was particularly significant (+12,3%, +37,2 million euros) thanks above all to higher sales to Switzerland and France. The Gallaratese clothing-textiles (+9%, +24,2 million euros), the Castel Goffredo hosiery (+6,1%, +5,2 million euros) and the Footwear of Vigevano (+21,7%, +2,6 million euros).

Finally, the districts of the first three months of 2023 closed overall in negative territory Rubber and plastic (-4,8% vs. 2022, -31,2 million euro), where the higher sales recorded by the Sebino Bergamasco rubber district (+7,8%, +13,5 million euro) were not capable of offsetting the decrease suffered by Rubber and plastic items in Varese (-9,3%, -44,7 million euro).

Export districts of Lombardy: US and UK doing well. They go down to Germany

It is towards mature markets that the exports of the Lombard districts recorded the greatest growth in value compared to the first quarter of 2022. The best performances can be highlighted in the Usa (+63 million euros) and in UK (+51) in particular in engineering; in French (+33) in Agro-food and in the fashion system, and again in Switzerland (+32) in the fashion system. Among the emerging countries, the Turkey (+41 million euros), the United Arab Emirates (+27) and theSaudi Arabia (+25), first and foremost in engineering. On the other hand, the sales of Metalmechanics towards the Germany, the main outlet market of the Lombard industrial districts. A minus also towards China (-38 million euros), where there is a contraction in exports of all the Lombard sectoral chains.

First quarter 2023 exports of Technological poles of Lombardy are at higher levels than those recorded in the same period of 2022 (+8,3%, +293,3 million euros), with a higher dynamic than the national average, excluding Lombardy itself (-0,8%) . Only the aerospace hub of Lombardy (-3%, -6,8 million euros) has lower exports compared to the 1st quarter of 2022; however, the export trend of this pole must be read with due attention, considering that these are flows influenced by long-term orders. All the other technological hubs in Lombardy closed instead in progress compared to the corresponding period of the previous year. In order, by increase in values: the ICT hub of Milan and Monza (+14,1%, +153,3 million euros), the Lombardy pharmaceutical hub (+6,4%, +130,8 million euros ) and the Biomedical of Milan (+9,4%, +16,1 million euros). 

Among the markets of the technology hubs that record the best performances in the first three months of 2023, compared to 2022, there are the Switzerland (+154 million euros), the United States (+152), theNetherlands (+90) and Singapore (+67) which, alone, absorb 42% of total foreign sales.

From Intesa 500 million for bad weather damage

Intesa Sanpaolo has allocated 500 million euro for families and businesses in those areas that have suffered damage and they are facing numerous hardships. This is a dedicated financial support at favorable conditions intended for families, businesses, small artisans and traders, companies in the agribusiness sector and third sector entities affected by the effects of bad weather, to make it possible for businesses to promptly continue their businesses and families to deal with this emergency situation. The banking group also provides the possibility of requesting the suspension for 12 months of the principal portion of the outstanding loan installments for households and businesses residing in the areas affected by the storm.
