Italian men's fashion remains stable despite the storm: exports to China grow by 20%

In 2024, men's clothing sales confirmed the previous year's levels (+0,1%), for a value of 9,54 billion. While France remains the leading destination market (+5,5%), strong expansion is reported in the United Arab Emirates (+32,4%), China (+20%), Poland (+14%), Hong Kong (+13,7%) and Japan (+11,5%).

Despite a uncertain macroeconomic context and a decline in global demand, last year fashion Italian masculine has confirmed its ability to hold up on foreign markets. According to data processed by Confindustria Fashion on an ISTAT basis, the export of the sector recorded a marginal growth of +0,1% compared to 2023, reaching 9,54 billion euros. 

Sales to the EU countries (+0,6%) represent 45,9% of the total, while those towards Non-EU countries (-0,2%) confirmed their dominance with 54,1%. At the same time, the cheap imports fell by -5,4%, confirming a weaker domestic market and a possible reorganization of supply chains.

Men's Fashion: France First Destination, Growth Boom in China

La France is confirmed as the first destination market for the Italian men's fashion, with an increase of +5,5% and a value equal to 1,225 billion (12,8% of the total). Followed by Germany (-3,1%) And Usa (+1%), while the China showed a growth of +20%, reaching 777 million. Among the markets in strong expansion are Hong Kong (+ 13,7%), Japan (+ 11,5%), Poland (+14%) ed UAE United (+32,4%).

Analyzing exports by product category, only two segments closed 2024 in positive territory: leather clothing (+11,1%) and that packaged (+0,1%). All other sectors were down.

Imports are rising

On the import front, only theleather clothing showed a positive growth (+5,2%), while ties (-20,2%), packaged clothing (-5,8%) And shirts/knitwear (-5,2%) recorded significant declines.

La China remains the main supplier (12% of the total), followed by Bangladesh and France. Also noteworthy is the significant growth of Spain as a supplier (+19,4%). Furthermore, it should not be underestimated that many garments from Asia transit through the Netherlands, a true customs hub at European level.
