In the race for wearable devices, from hyper-technological glasses to 007 watches, another marathon runner appears in addition to Google and Apple: Intel.

The microchip maker – writes the Wall Street Journal – confirmed the purchase of Basis Science, a small startup with 60 employees known for a watch that monitors vital parameters and workout progress.

The financial aspects were not disclosed. But the industry magazine TechCrunch in early March had written that Intel was ready to shell out between 100 and 150 million dollars.

Born in 2011, Basis has raised 32,3 million dollars and produces a watch (on sale for 199 dollars) that monitors sleep quality, heart health, calories spent during a workout: all data can be synchronized with iOS devices from Apple and Android via Bluetooth.

Intel had already announced its interest in this market this year during CES in Las Vegas. The CEO, Brian Krzanich, had presented some wearable devices on which the group is working.
