Gianluca Bufo, former CEO of Iren Mercato and director of the group since 2015, was chosen by the mayors of Genoa, Turin and Reggio Emilia to take on the role of CEO di Iren. His appointment was decided atunanimity. This change comes following an internal crisis involving the former CEO, Paolo Signorini, fired at the end of June following an investigation into corruption allegations.

“The experience and expertise of Gianluca Bufo, director of the Group since 2015, will be fundamental – underlines the Committee – to immediately delve into the merits of the open issues and to pursue the objectives indicated in the industrial plan”.
Bufo will be co-opted into the Board of Directors and appointed CEO starting next year September, keeping the same delegations of his predecessor. Furthermore, he will continue to cover Interim the role of CEO of Iren Mercato, without receiving additional compensation compared to that envisaged for his role in Iren.
Bufo: this is who the new CEO of Iren is
Gianluca Bufo, graduated in Mechanical Engineering from the University of Padua, has a consolidated background in the energy sector. He worked in Eni since 2000, covering significant roles in strategic and commercial planning, before joining Iren in 2015. In 2000, Bufo entered the area cfo of Eni Gas&Power Division, dealing with strategic planning and management control. In 2009, he moved to the commercial area, where he managed planning and led key acquisitions such as those of Toscana Energia Clienti and Sea Viareggio.
From 2009 to 2014, as senior vice president of retail operations, he achieved notable results in the digitalization of after-sales services and in reducing costs for 8 million customers. From 2014 to 2015, he was senior vice president sales, responsible for the Italian commercial area of Eni Retail Gas&Power.
Since July 2015, Bufo has been director of the market business unit and energy management director of the Group Iren.
