FS Group invests 1,3 billion for new Frecciarossa: the first in 2025

The company has ordered 36 new trains from Hitachi Rail, with the option for a further 10 units, for a total of 46. The first deliveries will start as early as 2024, continuing until 2028 with around eight trains per year.

In the 2025 FS group will bring the Italian railways to the new Frecciarossa 1000 thanks to a investment of over 1,3 billion eurosThe company has ordered 36 new trains from Hitachi Rail, with an option for a further 10 units, for a total of 46. The first deliveries will start as early as 2024, continuing until 2028 with approximately eight trains per year.

Efficiency and sustainability improvements for the Frecciarossa 1000

The Frecciarossa 1000 is being renewed with a focus on greater energy efficiency and on improvement of materials, now 97,1% recyclable and 98,2% recoverable – respectively +2,7% and +2,4% compared to the previous fleet – according to data presented during Innotrans 2024 in Berlin. Produced entirely in Italy, the train maintains the Epd (Environmental Product Declaration) certification and focuses on incremental sustainability solutions.

In addition to the technical updates, the Frecciarossa 1000 features a makeover of the interior to optimize space and improve comfort. In the Executive class Four new seats with laptop holders have been added. In the classroom Business, the interiors have been renovated for greater comfort and optimized usability, while the bistro area offers a reorganized space for the catering service. In Standard eight new luggage racks have been added, maintaining the same number of seats (300) but optimising the space for luggage, now equipped with larger overhead lockers. Pictograms and signs have also been added on board to make the train more accessible to the visually impaired and blind, a novelty that aims to improve inclusivity on board.

From the point of view technological, the new Frecciarossa 1000 offers a enhanced Wi-Fi connection and an optimised traction system, which helps reduce the train's overall energy consumption, increasing its efficiency.

The Frecciarossa 1000 in Europe

The expansion of the Frecciarossa 1000 is not limited to Italy. In Spain, trains operate under the iryo brand, with 65 daily connections in eleven cities, while in French Trenitalia connects Paris and Lyon, with extensions to ski resorts in winter. Preliminary agreements have been signed to bring the Frecciarossa to Germany e Slovenia by 2026, further extending the FS Group's high-speed rail network.

With these innovations, FS continues to update its fleet and spread the Frecciarossa high-speed model beyond national borders.
