Giuseppe Conte of the Five Star Movement, Matteo Salvini of the Lega and Silvio Berlusconi of Forza Italia by denying confidence in the Senate in Mario Draghi sign the regicide of the best Italian premier of recent decades, send the government home and pave the way for early political elections. This is the hallucinating result of the Black Wednesday of Palazzo Madama which marked the de profundis of the Draghi government and certainly restored a smile to Vladimir Putin, the only true winner of the Italian self-dissolution.
Conte, Salvini and Berlusconi: the real reasons for the fight against Draghi
But how to explain the apocalypse of the Senate? In the next few days someone will say that Mario Draghi he was fed up with the petty quarrels of the Five Stars and the League and was looking for a way out to resign, that his interventions in the Senate could be softer, that there was no need to evoke civil mobilization in favor of his permanence in Palazzo Chigi and that adherence to the Casini resolution, which was the most neutral imaginable, sounded rude to the center-right government. All nonsense.
In reality Draghi made a speech of great dignity at Palazzo Madama speaking to Italy the language of truth without caring about political pettiness and without seeking mediocre compromises to defend a seat he had not sought but always respecting Parliament.
But it is precisely the language of truth and the will to finally change the country with reforms, which not only Europe is asking of us but which we should have done for years, which are indigestible to those political forces who would sell even their mother for a few more vote and who have demonstrated, once again, that they do not pay the slightest attention to the general interests of the country. What's the point of the intention of immediately sending home a government that was honoring Italy in a way that hasn't happened for years and that would have finished its race within a few months at the natural expiry of the legislature? It certainly does not make sense to have sought the best for Italy because sending home the most authoritative Italian in the world is only a tragic own goal, which causes us to lose money (those of the Pnrr) and above all the international reputation of our country, which has returned with Draghi the protagonist in Europe and beyond, especially in the dramatic season of Russia's war against Ukraine.
Conte, Salvini and Berlusconi: how much damage to Italy by turning its back on Draghi
We cannot screw up all the good things the Draghi government has done to oppose the waste-to-energy plant in Rome, to defend not only the rights but also the strikes against the citizenry of taxi drivers, to close our eyes to the inconsistencies of the Income of citizenship and fraud born in the shadow of the Superbonus. But what could one expect from a scammer like Giuseppe Tale, in which only the short-sightedness of the Democratic Party has believed for so long, but which has always put its personal and partisan interests before those of the country? And what about Salvini who couldn't resist the temptation to repeat Papeete's farce in the Senate? As for Berlusconi one must have respect for age, but it was already understood from the interview with Corriere della Sera of the faithful Confalonieri that the leader of Forza Italia smelled the smell of blood and would not have used half measures to undermine Draghi and pursue the vanity of a return to the scene and a possible electoral redemption.
The damage that the liquidation of the Draghi government brings to the country is immense, but enormous are also those that weigh and will weigh on the cause of peace. Draghi's Italy was the Western country most consistently committed to supporting Ukraine and creating the foundations for a future peace negotiation in which Russia's brute force did not prevail. If Putin is smiling now, those who managed to send Draghi home should look in the mirror and ask themselves why.
