Public debt, Bankitalia: rises again with a new negative record at 3.034 billion. The presence of foreign investors is growing

New negative record for the Italian public debt which grows by another 9,5 billion in March compared to the previous month and reaches a figure of 3.033,9 billion. This was announced by Bankitalia in the latest statistics "Public finance: requirements and debt". In detail, the requirements of public administrations (23,7 billion), the note says, has more than offset the reduction in the Treasury's liquid assets (13,9 billion, to 62,2) and the effect of the discounts and premiums on issuance and reimbursement, the revaluation of inflation-indexed securities and the change in exchange rates (-0,2 billion).

With reference to the distribution by subsectors, the debt of the Central Administrations increased by 9,6 billion, while that of the Local Administrations decreased by 0,1 billion. The debt of the Social Security Institutions remained substantially stable.

La average residual life of debt – unchanged from the previous month – was equal to 7,9 years.

The share of foreign investors in Italian debt is growing

La debt quota held by the Bank of Italy decreased to 20,5% (from 20,8% in the previous month). In February (the last month for which this data is available) the percentage of debt held by non-residents increased to 31,9% (from 31,4% last January), while that held by other residents (mainly households and non-financial enterprises) increased to 14,3% (from 14,2% the previous month).

In March the tax revenue accounted for in the State budget were equal to 38,1 billion, an increase of 2,8%, equal to 1,0 billion, compared to the corresponding month of 2024. In the first three months of the year they were equal to 128,1 billion, an increase of 4,2%, equal to 5,1 billion, compared to the same period of the previous year.
