Electricity and gas bills: Antitrust opens investigation into Enel Energia regarding the methods of communicating renewals

THEAntitrust has started an investigation against Enel Energia to ascertain any unfair commercial practices on methods of communicating renewals. The investigation comes as a result of “the numerous and continuous complaints (over 600), from January 2024, of individual consumers and micro-enterprises, also through consumer associations, who complain of having received, during the billing cycles relating to the four-month period October 2023 - January 2024, bills containing a significant increase in price of gas and electricity supplies compared to the bills referring to the same time period in the previous year", the Authority informs.

The Antitrust opens investigation into Enel

In its monthly bulletin, the Antitrust explains that “reporters represent, in addition to the difficulty of supporting quadrupled or quintupled disbursements compared to the past, of not having received any preventive information in written form (via e-mail or paper), by Enel Energia, regarding the contractual renewal and that it was therefore unable to exercise the right of withdrawal, nor choose a different energy supplier”. “

Some users – adds the Authority – report regularly receiving invoices via email (or on the app), but have not received any renewal communication of the economic conditions through the aforementioned channels and that I had accidentally found an email in the spam, coming from Enel Energia, to which was attached the communication of renewal, following the expiry, of the economic conditions of supply".

Enel Energia's response

Enel Energia rejected the hypotheses advanced in the investigation by stating “to have always acted in full compliance with the law primary and sector, as well as contractual regulations. Enel Energia is confident that it can demonstrate the full correctness of one's actions as the proceedings continue", reads a note from the company.
