With the award by the Ministry of Economic Development of the 5G experimentation in Bari and Matera on the 3.6-3.8 GHz spectrum frequencies, the project by Tim, Fastweb and Huawei for the construction of the new mobile network in the two cities enters the operational phase .
The three winning companies of the tender presented a joint plan as lead partner and in coordination with 52 international, national and local subjects - including university centres, companies in the ICT sector and companies operating in vertical markets with a strong economic and social impact - aiming to achieve the objectives in advance of the timing of the 5G Action Plan of the EU Commission.
In fact, the project envisages activating the first 5G usage scenarios by June 2018, to achieve 75% of the 5G coverage of the territory by the end of the same year, and full coverage of the two cities by 2019.
The experimentation of TIM, Fastweb and Huawei aims to establish an open digital platform, capable of welcoming initiatives from other subjects (public administrations, technological and industrial partners), for the development of services and applications supported by the 5G network which enrich the ecosystem digital of the cities of Matera and Bari.
Meanwhile, Wind Tre and Open Fiber have been awarded the frequencies for 5G trials in the cities of L'Aquila and Prato. Furthermore, this experimentation sees the involvement of various public and private subjects: research centres, universities, companies
Ict and local production realities, with the aim of significantly improving the service offer to citizens. Wind Tre and Open Fiber will start testing activities in L'Aquila and Prato already at the end of 2017 and will then be completed by 2020.
