5G, TIM adheres to the European project for the Open RAN

Tim joins the European initiative for the development of innovative solutions for the mobile ultrabroadband network. The company headed by Luigi Gubitosi has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with other European operators, such as Deutsche Telekom AG, Orange SA, Telefónica SA and Vodafone Group Plc to promote Open Radio Access Network (Open RAN) technology in favor of deployment of next-generation mobile networks for the benefit of consumers and businesses.

With this membership, the Group strengthens its commitment to the development of innovative solutions for the mobile ultra-broadband network which, by exploiting open virtualized architectures, enables increasingly agile, flexible, secure and functional communication for the dissemination of 5G digital services.

The initiative will thus give a strong boost to the introduction of new functions of the broadband mobile network, in particular the 5G one, thus promoting an ever-increasing diffusion and improving its management.

Furthermore, the development of Open RAN solutions will increase the available options allowing operators to strengthen security standards, improve network performance and optimize costs, with the aim of providing increasingly advanced digital services such as those linked to new solutions for the industry 4.0.

“TIM's commitment to creating an ecosystem on O-RAN – he declared Michele Gamberini, Chef Technology and Information Officer of TIM – in addition to strengthening Italian companies already engaged in the development of solutions for new generation mobile networks, it represents a concrete opportunity to guarantee our country a leading role as a supplier of technologies for digital transformation on a European scale".
