5G, Tim: +393 billion for Italy by 2040

According to the Centro Studi Tim, 5G could guarantee savings of one billion euros a year for Italian healthcare starting from 2025

5G, Tim: +393 billion for Italy by 2040

By 2040, the 5G will bring to the Italian economy a positive contribution equal to 393 billion euros. The Centro Studi Tim writes it in a report, specifying that 160 billion will be generated by services for people and the remaining 233 by the Internet of Things. If we narrow our gaze to the decade 2020-2030, the new technology will guarantee the Italian GDP a benefit of around 78 billion.

"Europe is rushing towards 5G and Italy was among the forerunners - underlines Stefano Siragusa, chief revenue officer of Tim - We are also among the largest investors: with the National Recovery and Resilience Plan, our government has decided to put two billion euros on the table to support the development and diffusion of 5G". Only Germany is better than us, with three billion.

5G AND HEALTHCARE

As for the sectors of application - continues the analysis by the Study Center - 5G is worth one billion euros a year for Italian healthcare starting from 2025, a figure that includes savings in various areas: 790 million in clinical monitoring, 150 in prevention and 32 in insurance policies. Another four million a year will then come from greater efficiencies in pharmaceuticals, particularly in research and development activities. On a practical level, among the main health applications of 5G (tried but not yet widespread) are telesurgery, connected ambulance and high definition teleconsultation.

5G AND MANUFACTURING

Also starting from 2025, the use of new technology in the Italian manufacturing sector - continues the study - will lead to an increase in productivity of 1% every year, which corresponds to a growth in added value of 2,5 billion. In the industrial field, the innovative solutions connected to 5G include the remote control of robots and self-driving vehicles, latest generation applications for data collection and monitoring, video surveillance and 3D printing.

5G AND AUTOMOTIVE

In the automotive sector, the analysis estimates that 5G will produce overall benefits of around 3,2 billion euros a year starting from 2025. In particular, "the introduction of 5G will allow both to improve production processes, enhancing the automation of factories - reads the study - and to enrich the equipment of circulating cars with more powerful and distributed connections, enabling new use scenarios such as self-driving cars or remotely driven cars".

Manufacturers will thus be able to “strengthen data collection by analyzing any anomalies on board in real time – continues the analysis – improve the driving experience and vehicle performance, predict the need for maintenance in advance, enable autonomous driving solutions ”. For builders active in Italy, all this will translate into a benefit of approximately 920 million euros a year from 2025.

5G AND ENERGY

On the electricity and gas front, thanks to smart meters (which provide data on consumption in real time) 5G will bring an overall benefit of over 160 million a year from 2025. For Italian consumers, the study talks about possible savings of 10%, which correspond to 620 million euros per year from 2025.

In the management of water resources, on the other hand, the new technology can make it possible to reduce losses on the network by 10%, with over 700 million euros in annual benefits for the supply chain.

5G AND THE ENVIRONMENT

Finally, as far as the environment is concerned, the Tim study center claims that 5G will allow a reduction in waste production by 1% every year, with economic savings of around 106 million a year from 2025.

5G WILL GROW UP BY THE END OF 2021

Siragusa then explained that the adoption of 5G depends on the “distribution of terminals. There is a lot of 5G in Italy, even too much compared to what is used. Adoption has been slow across Europe. In Italy there is strong growth in 5G data traffic and we expect an increase in the second half of the year when all manufacturers start launching 5G products”.

As for the possible effects of 5G on the football matches that Tim broadcasts in collaboration with Dazn, Siragura explained that “the use of the services is not a theme of network stability and the network is not having problems: having 5G or not changes little. The problems aren't related to that."

"In the world and in Italy, 5G is entering the lives of people and businesses: with Tim's 5G customers are experiencing the performance of this technology - underlines Carlo Nardello, Chief strategy, business development and transformation officer of Tim - All this it takes place at a particular moment in our history, a period of migration towards the post-pandemic, but above all of transition towards a more digital Italy. A transition that can only take place if the use of solutions based on ultra-broadband, cloud, internet of things and precisely 5G spreads”.
