5G, many mayors block it out of superstition

The vetoes of many Italian municipalities on 5G for alleged health risks that have never been demonstrated are purely anti-scientific and irrational - An appeal by the Foundations, coordinated by FOR, to draw the attention of the institutions and public opinion to the need for Italy to recover in hurry the delays in the diffusion of digital technologies

5G, many mayors block it out of superstition

There is no plan to relaunch the Italian economy, which is emerging very battered from the Covid-19 health emergency, which does not envisage a complete digitization of the country and therefore a strong technological and cultural change in the way of working and social relations. Yet there are powerful forces opposing 5G fearing that electromagnetic emissions could be harmful to citizens. More than 500 mayors are blocking the installation of antennas for the 5G network with resolutions which, in the best case scenario, require ministries and health authorities for further information, so as to start a political-bureaucratic process which in Italy could last even years.

A cry of alarm about what is happening was launched by a dozen Foundations and research institutes, coordinated by FOR – Optimists & Rationals Foundation chaired by Claudio Velardi, who bought advertising space in some newspapers to underline that our country is already lagging behind in the diffusion of digital technologies, but that these are now essential to be able to think of a way out of the crisis on new and with a truly competitive economy. If we want a country based not on "subsidies" but on work, today there is an opportunity that we cannot miss.

The manifesto of the research associations requires above all that in order to accelerate investments, it is necessary to put order in the authorization processes which will have to be centralized. In these moments no money is required from the Government, even if the funds that will come from Brussels will be able to accelerate private investments. A role will also be up to local authorities but, as the Colao floor, you need to win the irrational and antiscientific positions, entrusting the responsibility for decisions to a central body.

On the other hand, these are totally unmotivated fears. The international and national health authorities have done in-depth research on the subject and in no way does there appear to be any relationship between the emissions of electromagnetic waves and the onset of tumors or other disabling diseases. The World Health Organization and the International Institute for Research on Cancer have found that there is no proof that these emissions have had effects on humans and not even on animals.

And these experiments, repeated several times, are in any case carried out by administering far more massive doses of electromagnetic waves than those that can be absorbed by a person who normally uses his or her cell phone. And many mayors anyway they don't know that 5G has lower emissions than the current ones. Finally, for further peace of mind for everyone, it is worth remembering that the Italian emission limits are considerably lower than those set at European level.

On the table therefore there is also the proposal to abolish the Italian rules and adopt the European ones as indeed many other EU countries do. A bit like it is also asked to do for the procurement code which in Italy has been unnecessarily burdened with rules and controls dictated by the distrust of the State towards citizens and its employees, but which in fact block all public works.

The mayors of important Municipalities such as Udine, Messina, Vicenza, Syracuse, are not protecting their citizens from health risks, but are condemning them to be cut off from an economic development which, as all experts predict, will either go through digitization or there will be no recovery in growth and therefore no increase in job opportunities.
