3 Italia, with Fastweb, launches the new mobile Wi-Fi in the city

It is the first Wi-Fi service in "open" urban areas that completely integrates the UMTS-LTE mobile network and the fiber network via Wi-Fi. The debut is today on an experimental basis at Monza. The test with 35.000 customers will last one month – 3 will make use of Fastweb's fiber optic network already active in 23 Italian cities. Then we will move on to marketing

3 Italia, with Fastweb, launches the new mobile Wi-Fi in the city

3 Italia in partnership with Fastweb launches the first Wi-Fi service in open urban areas, therefore without the need to identify yourself with an access key, fully integrated with your own UMTS-LTE mobile network. Service 3Wi-Fi uses the Fastweb fiber optic network (FTTC technology, Fiber to the cabinet) already active in 23 Italian cities.

The new 3 service was launched today on a free trial basis in the city center of Monza for 35.000 customers. It is aimed at owners of iOS smartphones and tablets (the whole range) and Android (in the versions compatible with 3Wi-Fi).

The novelty allows customers to switch automatically, without having to type in access keys each time, and in a completely transparent way from the UMTS-LTE network to the Wi-Fi network and vice versa without interrupting Internet access. The access procedure must only be performed the first time by selecting the 3Wi-Fi network from those available. Then it will be sufficient to have Wi-Fi active on your mobile device to connect automatically every time you are under coverage 3Wi-Fi.

"Once again 3 Italia confirms itself as the most innovative company in the telecommunications landscape, launching for the first time in our country a service that for mobile operators is increasingly becoming an international best practice", said Dina Ravera, Chief Operating Officer of 3 Italia. "Thanks to its infrastructure and technology, Fastweb is the best partner for testing a service with great potential and which is already ready on our network for customers 3".

Fastweb, for its part, "makes all the power of fiber available to the mobile operator to make the browsing experience of mobile users even more powerful and satisfying," said Fabrizio Casati, Fastweb Wholesale director. “We expect this example to be followed in other cities besides Monza”.

To implement the project, Fastweb supplied the Fiber To The Street (FTTS) technology already available in 23 Italian cities (Pisa, Varese, Monza, Livorno, Verona, Brescia, Turin, Palermo, Padua, Bari, Ancona, Reggio Emilia, Rome , Genoa, Bologna, Modena, Bergamo, Venice, Pescara, Como, Catania, Busto Arsizio, Legnano) and under construction in 80 other cities.
