Def-Con in Las Vegas (August 9-12), the largest event on the cybersecurity which brings together the best ex-hackers in the world (and some active hackers) in the capital of Nevada, has recently closed with extraordinary results, above all for an event that saw 30 kids hack US sites and voting machines in very short times, those who had awarded Trump the "victory" of the elections against Clinton in 2016. And that they should once again be at the service of the Trumpian boycotters in the upcoming Midterm elections. Before our eyes the ablest of them, an XNUMX-year-old, changed the “official” election results mmanipulating vote, party names, candidate names and vote totals. And tripled the number of votes found on the website in less than 15 minutes. Not only that: some of these geniuses have turned these voting machines into funny ones show room jukebox.
THE 231 BILLION DOLLARS THE CYBERSECURITY MARKET
It all took place at Def-Con Voting Machine Hacking Village, at the tawdry Caesars Palace mega-hotel-casino, which, along with the Flamingo, opened in 1946 by mobster Bugsy Siegel, is the headquarters of DEF-CON. A success announced year after year for this convention of ex-hackers (many are now consultants to governments and multinationals): visitors were 8 in 2008, and at this edition, the 26th, they exceeded 30. No online registrations (who trusts them? they say…), very hot outside (40-45 degrees, not even 20 inside) and a series of revelations that make you shiver.
Among a hundred hyper-specialist conferences, competitions of super brains (there were also Italians, very good), very confidential meetings and very few formalities, it has been demonstrated that our digital paths are studded with very high risks. Starting with those related to home smart which with its systems and devices connected to "clouds", sites, surveillance centres, assistance centers and smartphones, is easily hackable. But behind this game of super brains, a true reality, of billions of dollars: according to Statista the turnover of cybersecurity exceeds i 231 billion dollars, with an average spend per company of $1,8 million. And always with double-digit increases.
HACKERS HIT EVEN WITHOUT THE INTERNET
State and federal officials present tried to attack the activity of these laboratories, forgetting that last year the same thing happened, even faster and by "authoritative" ex-hackers who with incontrovertible arguments had silenced all criticism. Again they demonstrated with extreme clarity not only that it was easy to alter the electoral results but also that the falsifications had taken place and in what ways…. We asked one of the organizers referring the harsh criticism of the representatives of different states. These accused the organizers of having set up a laboratory far from reality. "That's not true, that's exactly what works during and after the election."
For that matter, some of these Trump officials have argued that they are actually voting machines, to limit attacks and violations they would be "air gap" and that is never connected to the Internet. Hackers don't care – the organizers of DEF-CON replied – they manage to violate any device, even if it is not connected. And in fact, Stuxnet, a tremendous virus was able to breach the Iranian nuclear system despite not being connected to the Internet. In fact, the Iranians kept their centrifuges in armored vaults in the desert, without any Internet connection.
