September 11, the massacre that changed the world

15 years have passed since the impressive attack by Al Qaeda terrorists on the Twin Towers in New York but nothing is the same as before. America's and the world's dream of a future of peace and progress has given way to the insecurity and fear that dominate our times under all skies.

September 11 is a symbolic date but also a nightmarish day that no one will ever forget. In the eyes of those who lived through those terrible moments there is still the image of the planes hijacked by 19 terrorists who crashed on the Twin Towers causing them to implode. Almost 3 victims, including 300 firefighters and 60 agents.

Also unforgettable is the image of the plane that hit the Pentagon and the impression aroused by the attempted attack of a fourth plane on the White House. But most impressive and unforgettable of all remain the scenes of the innocent dead and injured in the Twin Towers.

On the occasion of the anniversary of 11 September, US President Barack Obama launched a heartfelt appeal to remain "united against terrorism" which has suffered severe blows but which is still lurking and has shed its skin and against which one can never stoop the guard.
